News: Supercheap Auto's Ingall And Morris Move Forward In Race 1

Published: Saturday, 2nd August, 2008

Supercheap Auto Racing's Russell Ingall and Paul Morris both moved seven places forward from their starting positions in Race 1 at Winton Motor Raceway today.

After qualifying 15th, Ingall finished the 40 lap contest in eighth position, while Morris moved from 21st to 14th - both Supercheap Auto Racing Commodores showing strong race pace.

Ingall made four spots over the opening five laps, Morris three, with both again adopting a strategy of staying out longer before making their compulsory pit stops - Ingall stopping on lap 12, Morris lap 20.

Ingall returned to the track in sixth, but lost two spots in the hustle of his opening lap on cold tyres. Twice a winner at Winton, he was then involved in a race long dice with fellow Holden drivers Todd Kelly and Michael Caruso to the chequered flag.

Morris was also caught up in a tight battle with five-time champion Mark Skaife and Shane Van Gisbergen, Morris moving past Van Gisbergen over the closing laps and finishing just 0.4s behind Skaife's Toll Holden Racing Team Commodore.

Ford's Jamie Whincup won the race from Will Davison, with the Toll Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander third.

Series leader and pole sitter Mark Winterbottom finished just 21st, his Falcon slowed over the opening laps by a deflating tyre while body damage received while he was passed by the field required a longer than normal pit stop for repairs.

The round concludes tomorrow (Sunday) with two final 40 lap races.

Russell Ingall, #39 Supercheap Auto Racing Holden Commodore VE:

"After a disappointing qualifying, we've come back with a good result this afternoon and set ourselves up for a strong finish to the weekend. We never had it in qualifying; we had an issue with the slow part of the track, and while we still had that in the race our pace was actually pretty good that one area in qualifying cost us getting into the top 10. Winton's a unique place and the locals seem to have a distinct advantage with that. Our race pace is definitely faster than some of the blokes in front of us today and, looking at the times, it's probably quick enough to run up the front of the pack. We're halfway there and we're going to punch away at it and see if we can finish in the top five in Race 2 then go from there."

Paul Morris, #67 Supercheap Auto Racing Holden Commodore VE:

"Race 1 was good for the team after a bit of struggle in qualifying. Again our race pace is good and our strategy and stops were right. Both Russell and I are in good positions for tomorrow. We'll make some tuning adjustments and hopefully come out better again tomorrow."
