News: Ingall ninth and Morris 20th for Supercheap Auto, Enforcer gives serve to unique Holden v Ford GP race format

Published: Saturday, 15th March, 2008

Russell Ingall has scored a top 10 finish in Race 2 for the Sprint Gas V8 Supercar Manufacturers Challenge, but the #39 Supercheap Auto Commodore will again lose spots on the grid for tomorrow's final race.

Starting 17th today, Ingall stormed past four cars before turn 1 and then made a further three spots by the end of the first lap, finally finishing the 15 laps race a strong ninth.

But due to the unique Holden v Ford format and being the sixth Commodore driver home, Ingall loses two grid positions for tomorrow's 19-lap final, bring his total lost to six over the course of the Grand Prix weekend.

In stark contrast, Ford's Steven Richards, who was involved in yesterday's first lap shunt and finished today's race 12th, has benefitted from the format, moving up four places Sunday thanks to being just the fourth Falcon home.

Ingall's team-mate, Paul Morris ran solidly after starting from rear of grid to finish 20th, Morris using the same tyres as yesterday and taking the opportunity to test components on his Supercheap Auto Racing Commodore in preparation for the next championship round.

Garth Tander easily won the race for Holden and the Toll Holden Racing Team, leading home yesterday's podium place getters, Ford drivers Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom.

Holden comfortably leads the series, 1346 to 1036 points, with one more race tomorrow.

Ingall's engineer, James Small again won the Aussie Racing Cars race, his second win of the weekend, and leads the event points with one final race tomorrow (Sunday) morning.

Russell Ingall, #39 Supercheap Auto Racing Holden Commodore VE:

"The format for this event is just stupid. I understand that we're not F1, but if they want to put on a show they should just get a heap of one make cars, throw the drivers in them and we'll give them entertainment. All this artificial stuff with $500,000 cars is just not on - there's just too many cars getting damaged. We're beyond being a celebrity race, we're a national and international championship. I think the sponsors get their moneys worth at normal rounds, they don't need to be here. Either play the game and put a proper race on or stop coming here.

"On the performance side, another top 10 result is good. We've proved we can run there, so now we have to start aiming higher. We're still to overcome a couple of niggling handling issues, we're not quite on top of them, but once we do we're not too far away. Next is top five, then winning races."

Paul Morris, #67 Supercheap Auto Racing Holden Commodore VE:

"Today's race was good; we made a fair few spots even running yesterday's old tyres and tried out a few different things - some making the car better in some spots, worse in others. But the real fun was watching all the chaos going on all round the track - and there was plenty of it!"
