News: Ingall / Morris To Start L&H 500 Sixth After Qualifying Saturday, Internationals Neal / Said Continue To Gain V8 Experience

Published: Saturday, 13th September, 2008

The Supercheap Auto Racing Commodore of Russell Ingall and Paul Morris will start tomorrow's L&H 500 at Phillip Island from sixth position, with international guests Matt Neal and Boris Said to start from position 26 in the second Supercheap Auto Holden.

Ingall and Morris earned the grid position with two strong results in today's 'qualifying' races. Ingall finished the second, 'Driver B' race fourth, while Morris was 15th in the first 'Driver A' having elected to make the one compulsory pit stop - Morris 'effectively' fourth with the first 10 cars not having stopped in that race.

Both were involved in fabulous, panel rubbing dices in their respective races, Morris with the Toll Holden Racing Team's Mark Skaife, Ingall with former team-mate James Courtney, Courtney earning the wrath of Ingall after the race for blocking.

Neal and Said achieved their goal of completing the races without incident, two-time British Touring Car Champion Neal making the compulsory stop in the first qualifier and finishing 26th, Said pushing through to 15th without the need to stop.

Paul Morris: "That was the best fun racing I've had in ages, it was like you've gone to a go-kart track with all your mates and you get the best one. We were rubbing panels and having a great battle, but in the end Skaifey was driving in his rear view mirror and I had to get up on the wheel and move him out of the way otherwise the guys behind would have been on top of me. The weekend's looking great, Russell got an excellent result in the other race and we've got a good grid position for Sunday."

Russell Ingall: "Today's a strong result, we've got a good starting spot for tomorrow's 500, but one more position and we would have been three spots further up the grid. I thought I had Courtney, but he was just quick enough in the right spots and then blocking so severe - and in the rules it says you're not allowed to block. I was on the racing line and [the officials] didn't do a thing about it. James called us Holden drivers old, but there's fight in us yet, especially me. I'm not a has-been, I'm still 'being' at the moment, and he's still a 'never was'."

Matt Neal: "Fantastic race, the car felt good and it was worth better than we finishing, but I didn't want to damage it. One more spot wasn't worth not finishing. I got some good miles and it was better on used tyres in comparison to the guys I was racing and that's good for tomorrow. I really enjoyed the race."

Boris Said: "Finally I'm a V8 Supercar driver. I knew it was going to be tough, but I didn't think it'd be this tough - these guys are really good. I'm so happy Paul asked me to come drive this Supercheap Auto Holden and I fell like I'm getting better each lap. This weekend's all about getting a lot of laps before Bathurst, so I'm still being pretty cautious."
