Supercheap Auto Racing's Chaz Mostert was among five drivers to set times below the current track record in a scorching opening day at Sydney Olympic Park.
Despite a slow start, Mostert moved up the table in the second session after a green tyre run to post the fourth fastest time.
Mostert is confident there is further room to improve ahead of qualifying tomorrow.
After reaching a scorching 37 degrees in practice, temperatures are set to drop on Saturday, forcing teams to do some homework overnight and adopt strategies for cooler temperatures.

"We had a bit of a slow start to the day but in practice two we ended up in the top five which I'm pretty stoked about. We made the car a bit better from practice one to two so at least we got a bit of a direction and I know what I need from the car to make it go a bit quicker again. Overall pretty happy with Friday practice but we need to keep innovating and moving on for the next session and see what we can do."
Rod Nash – Team Owner:
"There were a few things to iron out in opening practice today but we were able to tune the car up well for the final session and run in the top ten for most of the 40 minutes. Fourth is a pretty good result from where we were sitting earlier in the day which was at the opposite end of the field so I'm confident that there is more to come from the car and we will likely be in a good position tomorrow."
